The other day a self-proclaimed motivational speaking and writing guru told me that his dream was to speak in front of 100,000 people, but like me the most he had ever spoke in front of before was a less than 10,000. He even visualized this by putting a picture of someone speaking in front of thousands of people in his office. Today, his average audience is very manageable, around 500 people, nothing too tough.

A few things bothered me about this lifetime dream, the first is that, it is more important the performance and what the crowd gets out of it, than just getting the opportunity to have 100,000 faces listening to you. After all, you can be on TV and have a million people watching. Once, I was on a PBS Special, and it was viewed by 23 million people, over the one-month re-runs in various markets.

You see, it is fun to speak in front of very large crowds and watch the reaction and feel all that energy. It is definitely an ego booster for the day. I guess the trick is that once you have everyone listening attentively, that you give them something to think about that is worthy, to help them and to get them to take action to make the world a better place. Why are you so turned on about public speaking, they are just humans out in the audience, busy doing all their little human activities?

Hey, let me ask you a question, if I made you in charge of all the chimpanzees on the planet to lead them forward, would you aspire to that? We put them all in a stadium and let your speak and they would go bananas due to your wonderful entertainment value. Would you be as happy then?

Would it matter if there was 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 or even 100K in the stadium, how about 1 million on TV, would that be the same high for you? Have you ever considered the full implications as to what I am saying here? Think about that and get back to me.
